Opossums are usually harmless outdoors — they even eat ticks and slugs — but one denning under a deck, shed or in a crawl space needs to go. Removal in Georgia is more regulated than most homeowners expect. Call (404) 647-6677 for an inspection.
Signs you have an opossum
Denning under a deck, porch or shed, or in a crawl space; pet food or trash raided overnight; hissing, or “playing dead,” if cornered.
Why you shouldn’t trap and relocate one yourself
Georgia has no closed trapping season for opossum on private land, so trapping itself isn’t seasonally restricted. But relocating one is a separate question: UGA Extension states plainly that “relocating nuisance wildlife generally is discouraged and may be illegal” without landowner permission and, in many cases, a state permit.
Call Pest Control Atlanta to discuss your situation. Whoever you hire, ask what Georgia permit they hold for any relocation work.
How we handle opossum removal
Confirm entry points — deck skirting, shed gaps, crawl space vents — remove the animal, then seal those points so the space doesn’t get a new tenant.
Could it be something else?
Similar entry points also attract raccoons and squirrels. Not sure? Check the pest library.
