A city planned around space

Milton became a city on December 1, 2006, at the northern tip of Fulton County about 30 miles north of downtown Atlanta, bordering Cherokee and Forsyth counties and the cities of Roswell and Alpharetta. Wikipedia describes a “rural and equestrian heritage” with spacious residential lots, much of the land agriculturally zoned, and zoning for larger, septic-dependent lots that helped keep the pastoral character. The city plans by eight character areas: Arnold Mill, Bethany, Birmingham, Central Milton, Crabapple, Deerfield, Milton Lakes and Sweetapple. Elevation runs from about 950 to 1,280 feet.

This is general guidance, not a count of any jobs we have done: on a lot with grounds and outbuildings, more of the pest picture sits outside the house.

A seasonal yard and outbuilding checklist

UGA's guide to pest harborage lists the outdoor places pests settle, and a large lot has more of them. Work through the list once a season:

  1. Boards, patio stones, rock piles and trash piles. UGA lists the areas under them as man-made harborage. Move woodpiles and debris away from the house.
  2. Plantings against the house. UGA says to keep groundcovers at least 1.5 feet from foundation walls and to limit mulch depth.
  3. Birdseed and garbage. UGA says spilled bird food can feed rodents, and advises storing birdseed in a tightly sealed container away from doors and keeping outdoor garbage sealed and away from entrances.
  4. Drainage. Direct rainwater, gutters and downspouts away from the foundation, and clear standing water; mosquitoes use it too (CDC says to empty water-holding items weekly).
  5. Gaps in the house and any outbuilding. Seal cracks and entryways and add door sweeps and screening where it is missing.

What we do in Milton

Where Milton's buildings are multi-unit, EPA's point applies: cockroaches, mice, rats and bed bugs can be particularly troublesome in multi-family housing, and effective IPM needs all residents to cooperate. For a house, the three steps are the same everywhere we work: we inspect, treat the pests that are active, and deal with the entry points and conditions letting them in, backed by our “Satisfaction Guaranteed — Free Re-Treatment If Pests Return” guarantee.
