A mill town on Vickery Creek and the Chattahoochee

Wikipedia says Roswell King saw the potential for a cotton mill on Vickery (Big) Creek in 1830 and built what became the largest mill in North Georgia in the mid-1830s. The mill was burned during the Civil War; its ruins and a 30-foot dam remain. The city charter dates from February 16, 1854, and Roswell moved from Cobb County to Fulton County effective May 9, 1932. Today it has a National Register Historic District.

Water is never far away. The Chattahoochee River forms the southern boundary, a unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area sits at Vickery Creek, and the city maintains more than 900 acres of parkland. CDC says mosquitoes lay eggs in or near water and advises emptying and scrubbing, turning over, covering or throwing out items that hold water once a week. The river is outside your control; the buckets, saucers and clogged gutters in your own yard are not. See Mosquito Control.

Houses from the 1970s to the 1990s: what to check

Two in three Roswell homes were built from 1970 to 1999. UGA’s guidance is general, not a finding about any particular house, but it is a useful checklist for a home of this age:

  1. Crawl spaces, attics and wall voids. UGA lists them as common harborage inside a structure. Know where your access points are.
  2. Moisture. UGA calls persistent moisture the most important condition for many infestations. Check gutters, downspouts and any damp crawl space.
  3. Gaps and entryways. Seal cracks and gaps, and check door sweeps, window screens and the screening on foundation and attic vents.
  4. Plantings. UGA says to keep groundcovers at least 1.5 feet from foundation walls and to limit mulch depth.

For crawl spaces, see Crawl Space Encapsulation; for termites, Termite Control and the Eastern Subterranean Termite guide.

Apartments and townhouses

About a quarter of Roswell homes are in buildings of five or more units, and another 12% are attached houses. EPA says cockroaches, mice, rats and bed bugs can be particularly troublesome in multi-family housing, and that integrated pest management works best when residents cooperate. If you manage a building, see Apartment Pest Control. If you rent, tell your manager you are calling. For shops, offices and restaurants, see Commercial Pest Control.
